Anxiety disorder is a term that is used without diagnosis so often. Very much like the word depression. Self-diagnosis is often wrong and what people believe about themselves having a disorder is generally more about what the individual thinks about their own self worth rather than the symptoms they are experiencing.
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety has a vast array of terminology attached to it and there are plenty of anxiety therapists that will tell you that the subject of anxiety is so very complex and can’t be easily described. However, I don’t find anxiety disorders or generalised anxiety to be very complex at all. It really is as simple as this:
Anxiety is the feeling in your body from your mind being overly focused on the future through a negative viewpoint
It really is as simple as that. Think about it for a moment. When you have the feeling that you call anxiety you are always thinking about something that might happen in the future aren’t you? You could be thinking about something that could happen in the next 30 seconds or it could be something that could happen in the next 30 days. It really doesn’t matter. What is important to you is that when you think about the future in that way you get a feeling that you call anxiety.
How Does Anxiety Therapy Work?
Anxiety therapy works (through my model) by looking at what it is that you are feeling when you think about the future and then neutralising that feeling. Then instead of having a feeling that you label as being anxiety you could either have a neutral feeling or recognise the feeling as it should have been felt such as,
- excitement
- curiosity
- readiness
- achievement
- looking forward to something
What is happening with you at the moment is that you have an emotional charge that is triggered when you think about certain things. Whenever you think about that thing or you see/hear/smell/feel that thing you have an unconscious program inside of you that triggers off your fight/flight/freeze response.
What this does is start pumping adrenaline and cortisol through your body to help you to be able to run from what is scaring you if need be. Because these days we aren’t being scared by sabre-toothed tigers the cortisol that is sent to our hips crystallises there and over time can cause issues with your hips in later life. One of the best things you can do for yourself health-wise is to run it off. That doesn’t really seem viable in today’s world though.
The thing is that what you feel in your body initially before you choose to call it anxiety may not even be anxiety at all. What tends to happen with what we feel is this.
- The body feels something
- The conscious mind thinks about what it can call the feeling
- It gives the feeling a name and sticks with it
- Your conscious mind starts creating thoughts connected to the name
- It convinces you that the thoughts are the cause of the feeling
- It feels smug and proud to have proven that it is in control
